2004 2.7T Satellite Radio Retrofit

Postby rcfarris on Mon Feb 15, 2010 2:29 pm

I am looking to add satellite radio functionality to my 2004 allroad 2.7T. It currently does not have Sirius nor XM, but my understanding is it came pre-wired for both. Does anyone have a sense for the cost to add one or the other at this point? Is it a major undertaking? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Similar but different question. I have an 03. The head unit has a SAT button but no Sattelite connetction. The dealer assumed it was wired for Sattelite and it is not. Nobody seems to have fit kits or any options for my wife to get Sirrius in the car. Any suggestions? Thanks, George.

George the sat tuner connected to the head unit via the cd changer cable. After 2002 the cable was not standard and had to be added. If you have a rear 6 changer then you have what you need from the rear compartment.

Basic breakdown:

Sat module
Sat antenna (can use aftermarket puck)
Cd changer cable (rear to head unit)
Power cable
Pigtail cable from 6 changer to sat tuner

If you have the cd changer it feeds audio to the sat tuner then the sat tuner switches between it's audio and the changer depending on the selection at the head unit.

You basically need what i specified above. You will have to add the changer cable to get audio from the oem sat tuner.

Ah, i think i understand. First set it up with the rear changer and go from there, correct? Lots of steps but probably the best way to go if i can find someone who can do it. (and the changer) I'm considering the typical add-on sirrius tuner that can be mobile. Any idea how well these work provided an adapter is used to directly wire to your FM?

You dont need the actual changer... just the cable that runs from the changer LOCATION to the head unit. This "CD Changer" cable is what the SAT tuner feeds its audio down. Because of the limited input of the stock head unit the Audi SAT tuner uses the changer cable with or without the actual changer installed... If you already had a changer in place the SAT tuner has an internal switch to toggle the sound source from SAT to changer depending on what you choose at the head unit controls.

FM modulators blow. The quality isnt very good. You are better off getting a direct wire adapter to tap into the CD changer input of the headunit. Same concept as above but since the portable tuner would be up front you wont need the addition of the "changer cable". Several makers have iPod adapters that plug into the cd changer connection on the headunit - I suspect you could find an adapter for the portable SAT tuner. Ice Link is a very popular make.

thanks for that info. i hate FM modulators but with one of the options you mention one of the on-the-go options may well be the way i go. Kind of a shame but it should work. Ideally there would be someone i trusted in this town to run the cable to the back of the car and i'd go from there.
